Why are you asked "Why should we hire you?"
Interviewers use this question to assess your self-awareness and ability to articulate the unique thing you can bring to the company. When they ask "Why should I hire you?" they're looking to see whether you understand the role's requirements, and they’re checking that you can confidently explain how your specific skills, experience, and qualities make you the ideal match. This question reveals your level of preparation, communication skills, and genuine enthusiasm for the position. Not only that; a good answer also helps employers more easily explain in internal discussions why they should choose you over other candidates.
How to prepare your answer to "Why should we hire you?"
1. Go through the job description carefully

3. Get specific success stories ready
Come up with 2-3 solid examples that show measurable wins from your past jobs. Structure them using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Whenever you can, throw in numbers, percentages, or timelines to back things up. These concrete stories prove your bona fides instead of you just spinning tales claiming you're great. Real examples stick in people's minds when you're explaining why you're the right choice.
4. Link your goals to what the company wants
Do some digging on the company's mission, what they've been working on lately, and where they're headed. Match what you want in your career with where they're going to explain why you're interested in this specific opportunity. Make it clear you've thought about how this role fits into your bigger picture while also showing what you'd bring to help them succeed. This kind of two-way thinking demonstrates you're strategic about your career and serious about staying.
5. Practice saying it out loud
Run through your answer several times, shooting for something confident that takes about 60-90 seconds. Record yourself so you can catch filler words, check your pacing, and see how you come across. Candidates often don't get picked because they fumble the delivery, so practicing helps you sound natural instead of robotic or rehearsed. According to our survey, employers are most interested in relevant skills. This includes both hard and soft skills — i.e. they want to see that you have both programming chops and communication skills. By highlighting any tech skills and experience you already have, you can prove that you’re a good fit for the role.
But your experience needs to be put into a narrative context for your answer to stick in the hiring manager’s mind. One helpful way to make a story out of your interview answers is the STAR method, which stands for:
- Situation
- Task
- Action
- Result
For example, say you were part of an externship with a game content studio during which you researched the best languages for localization.
Your STAR list might look like this:
- Situation: An externship with a game content studio handling localization for game publishers
- Task: Discover the languages most in-demand for localization
- Action: Applied machine learning and natural language processing algorithms to analyze translation-related user reviews
- Result: Ended up building a model with a 98% precision at surfacing new languages for localization
So here’s a script you might follow:
Hiring manager: Why should I hire you?
You: Because I already have the experience that will make me a success in this role. Naturally, your situation will differ, and this is a bare-bones starting point. But if you have the skills and experience that will help you thrive in the company you’re interviewing for, highlight that and make sure the hiring manager knows you have the background that makes you the best candidate for the job.
“Because I have an impressive portfolio”
But let’s say you don’t necessarily have experience with direct relevance to the roles you’re going after. Don’t despair — you can still be a competitive job applicant! When interviewers ask this question, they might reframe it as “Why should we hire you with no experience?” But you can still point to your portfolio to prove you’re the person for the job.
Your portfolio is a cheat sheet for recruiters to check in on the tech projects you’ve built. If you’re just starting out in a tech career, you might not have a job at another tech company on your resume, but you can still have worked on sites or programs that people can check out. When you’re new to the industry, your portfolio is your ticket in. Highlight the entries on it — the projects you completed as part of your tech education, the code jams you participated in, and the sites and programs you might have built independently. “Because my previous career gives me a leg up”
Not having a background in tech can actually be an asset, but you’re still going to have to prove that you have the chops to do the job you’re interviewing for. And that means you’re going to need tech skills. However, when you do gain this know-how, don’t discount the unique skills you acquired in your previous non-tech career.
Often, teams actively want people who have more in their toolbox than Java, Tableau, Python, or other tech-focused capabilities. They want people who have domain-specific knowledge. So when someone asks you why they should hire you instead of someone else, you can mention your unique background.
And you wouldn’t be the only one who took their previous experience and turned it into a new career in tech. Just take Tiffany Hall, for example.

You may not be asked "Why should we hire you?" in every interview, but you might get similar questions that are basically looking for the same thing. Here’s a list of potential questions and answers:
Convince me to hire you
Hit them with three things: real accomplishments that match what they're looking for, skills that set you apart from other candidates, and genuine excitement about the job. This is a cut-to-the-chase question, so skip the generic fluff and give them concrete examples with actual numbers. Take what you've done before and connect it to the problems they're trying to solve right now, showing them you'll be ready to make a difference on day one and actually help the team get things done.
What are your three strengths?
Pick strengths that matter for the job you're interviewing for. For each one, tell them about a real situation where you used it and what happened as a result. Mix hard skills with soft skills—something like "data analysis, working across teams, and rolling with changes." Stay away from tired answers like "I'm a perfectionist" and stick with genuine qualities you can back up with real examples.
Why are you a good fit for this position?
Go through what they're looking for and show how you check each box. Pull from the job description and walk them through how your background lines up with what they need. Talk about relevant wins you've had, your technical chops, what you know about the industry, and why you'd fit in with their culture. Make it clear you've actually looked into the company and grasp what the job involves as well as where they're trying to go.
How to answer "Why should we hire you?" if you have no prior experience
Focus your answer on skills that transfer from school, internships, volunteer gigs, or projects you've worked on. Talk up your eagerness to learn, how fast you pick things up, and any relevant classes or certifications you've completed. Focus on the fresh ideas you'd bring, how adaptable you are, and how motivated you are to make an impact. Give them examples of times you've learned something new quickly and gotten results, even if it was in school or extracurriculars.
